Shangbaishan Fm
Type Locality and Naming
The type section is at area 1.5 km northeast of 996 highland southeast of Kawabulaktag in Shanshan County (88°29′40″E, 41°57′40″N), Xinjiang. The Shangbaishan Fm was named by Xiao Bing in 1979, and was published by Xinjiang Compiling Group for Regional Stratigraphic Scale (1981).
Synonym: (上白山组). The strata of the Shangbaishan Fm had previously been referred to as the upper part of the Querquek Fm applied to the Upper Arenig and Lower Ashgill in Kuruktag. Xiao (1979) separated it from the Querquek Fm, and gave the name and used it (Xiao, 1990).
Lithology and Thickness
The formation is dominated by black chert intercalated with siltstone, tuff, limestone and marl. In the type area, the Shangbaishan Fm is 406 m thick.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
This formation rests conformably on the calcareous and siliceous siltstone intercalated with limestone of the Xiabaishan Fm
Upper contact
It is unconformably overlain by the Lower Carboniferous (Xiaorequanzi Fm )
